Unfortunately, in our everyday life, we have to face a lot of situations when we forget or misplace something important. How often do you have to look for lost keys? We may even lose our beloved pet, and then we have to struggle in attempts to find it.
Of course, such situations are very stressful. However, we offer you a solution. The new Samsung Galaxy SmartTag and SmartTag Plus will help you track down lost items. In what follows we’ll tell you what the SmartTag is, how to use the SmartThings app and what differentiates this tracker from others. Keep reading.
What is the Samsung SmartTag?
Samsung’s SmartTag is a small device, which employs Bluetooth and Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) technologies to track different items. The tag’s app directs you to where the lost item is and shows it on your phone’s screen. So, actually, we can say that the Samsung SmartTag is a Bluetooth tracker.
Samsung Galaxy SmartTag and SmartTag Plus are powered by a CR2032 battery, which is common, affordable, and can be replaced by the user. Plus, you can have an augmented reality view, if you are close enough to your lost item to touch it (for this you need to tap an augmented reality mode in the SmartThings app.)
The device can be attached to your handbag, keys, and other personal items. Moreover, SmartTag can be used not only for keeping track of your personal items but is also very convenient to use for a smart home system.
You can control several home automation devices, such as smart lights and thermostats. Such a function is definitely worth the price of a tracker.
Note: These devices will only work if you have a Galaxy phone and tablet using the latest version of the SmartThings app (Galaxy S21 Plus, S21 Ultra, Note 20 Ultra). You can add up to 200 tags per device, but there can be some limitations since the SmartTag is a wireless-based device. And remember that only one tracker can be registered to an item per time.
How do Samsung Galaxy SmartTag and SmartTag Plus work?
The SmartTag Plus and Apple’s AirTags are the only trackers that use a combination of Bluetooth and Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) technology to find your tag’s location. It detects the location with the help of other Samsung devices in the area and sends this information to your phone (similarly, Apple AirTag uses iOS devices to find lost items).
How do you set up Samsung Galaxy SmartTag?
Scroll to the Find part of the SmartThings app. Then press the SmartTag Plus button. The Tag will make a thrilling sound, and you’ll see the New Device Found window. Then you need to tap Add Now and agree with Samsung’s software license. Tap Start.
Now choose the item you want to attach to your SmartTag and tap its name of it. For example, “keys” or “wallet”. Well, after setting up, the Find’s map will show the tag’s location. Then your tag may ask for updating its firmware. All in all, setting up won’t take you more than 10 minutes.
How do you use the SmartThings app?
How do you use the Samsung SmartTag when you’ve lost something? First, you need to set up SmartTag and link it to your Samsung account. Then find the SmartThings Find app on your phone and open it.
Find the Menu button and tap it. Then choose All devices. Choose the desired SmartTag or SmartTag Plus and then tap View Map. Now you see the map which shows the location of your tag.
In order to add, SmartTag also uses Google Maps for navigation and may require using the camera to find your stuff.
You’ll need to grant permission before using it. Moreover, to help you find the tag, you can make your phone play a sound. For instance, if the lost item is nearby, you can tap the ring button and follow the familiar sound of your ringtone at the volume you set.
How is it connected to other Samsung devices?
If your tag is close to you, you’ll see the indicator on the screen showing you how far away it is. If the tag is far away, other Samsung devices will anonymously locate it and let you know where it is. Due to ultra-wideband, your phone and the tag are able to communicate with each other and estimate a more precise location, within an accuracy of a few inches.
The owner of the device is not involved. This is done in the background and privacy is guaranteed.
How do I find my pet with the Samsung SmartTag?
Do I need to put a Samsung Galaxy SmartTag on my pet? Well, actually, you can do this. But, as we have already discussed, to find something SmartTag needs other devices to work. In this particular case, Samsung SmartTag is not always reliable. For example, if you are in a rural area and there are no phones around.
We recommend not relying on a limited-range Bluetooth item finder to track your pet. You’d better use GPS trackers for these purposes. We suggest you get acquainted with Tractive GPS. This is a tracker that was specially designed for controlling the location of your dog or cat.
The GPS tracker attaches to your pet’s collar and allows you not only to control their location but to keep track of your dog’s or cat’s activity. To add, Tractive GPS has such great features as an unlimited range (you can track your four-legged friend, no matter how far away it is). You can even set up a virtual fence, so when your pet leaves the safe territory, you’ll know it.
There are other interesting features, such as Family Sharing, which allows your family members, friends, and pet-sitters to control your pet with you, or LIVE Mode, which helps you to find your dog or cat within 2-3 seconds, or Location History, which shows where your furbaby has been in the last 365 days.
It must be said that there is a danger in using such a kind of device to search for your pet. Since it is small, your pet can easily swallow it. In spite of this, Tractive GPS is far better for tracking your pet, than SmartTag, which was originally designed for finding someone’s personal items.
Does SmartTag have GPS?
As well as Apple AirTag, the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag does not have GPS. The location can only be found with the help of other devices’ networks. So as we have already said in the previous paragraph, while the Samsung tracker can only search nearby other Samsung users, Tractive GPS uses universal technologies and cell networks to help you track your pet from everywhere.
Samsung SmartTag vs. SmartTag Plus
You may ask if there is any difference between Samsung SmartTag and SmartTag Plus. Well, the difference is that SmartTag Plus can feature ultra-wideband connectivity, in addition to Bluetooth. You can also use your phone’s rear camera to give you a SmartTag if you have the latest Samsung Galaxy phone.
The Samsung Galaxy SmartTag cannot be used with every Galaxy phone. Only Galaxy S21 Plus, S21 Ultra, and Note 20 Ultra can work with UWB technology.
Where can I find both versions?
Standard SmartTag was the first to launch, so you can buy them in electronics, for instance, online. The UWB version was launched later, so you can only get it directly from Samsung.
Samsung Galaxy SmartTag vs. Apple AirTag
Well, it must be said, that SmartTag and Apple AirTag are very alike. They were both developed to keep track of personal items that can be easily misplaced, like keys or a bike. And they both rely on other devices in the same network.
The difference is very obvious. Samsung SmartTag is compatible only with Android devices (Samsung devices) and Apple’s AirTag works only with iOS devices. You can’t install the SmartThings Find app on the iPhone and vice versa.
Note: Tractive GPS (a brand that makes trackers for pets) is compatible with Android and iOS devices. You can even track your pet using a web browser.
Other things you need to know about SmartTag
The SmartTag supports AR finding. Using AR Finding will help you to see exactly where the tag is, using a combination of your phone’s camera and in-app graphics to see the world around you. You just need to raise your phone.
Note: AR Finding can only be used with a Galaxy phone or tablet, which supports Android 11 0r higher. The feature is currently available on Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, Galaxy S21 Plus, Galaxy S21 Ultra.
Battery life is expected to last long, but there are several factors that can shorten it (when you use AR too often or leave a SmartTag alone for a long time). The SmartTag has a replaceable coin battery.
Galaxy SmartTag also has offline findings. As well as Apple and Tile Mate, when there is no Bluetooth range, SmartTag starts to search nearby using crowdsourcing.
But we must admit that it only works with Samsung phones, whose users agreed to help find the tags of other people.
To enable this finding mode, you need to go to the phone’s Biometrics and Security screen. Or you can also do it from the SmartThings Find interface. So, when someone’s phone receives the tag’s signal, the location goes to Samsung servers without the owner’s knowledge, and then the information is sent to your phone.
FAQ
How long does the Samsung Smart Tag battery last? Battery life is 1 year, but you need to remember that it depends on the usage pattern of users. Fortunately, you can easily replace the battery without any additional service to continue using the SmartTag. In the next paragraph, we will tell you how you can do this.
How do you change the battery in a SmartTag? The SmartTag uses a CR2032 battery, the same is usually used in watches. Snap the tag cover back. That’s it.
How do I know if my SmartTag is a low battery? As we said, the battery life of the SmartTag is approximately 1 year, so you won’t need to worry about it for a long time. However, you can simply check it by launching the SmartThings app on your smartphone, and then you need to tap the connected SmartTag.
Do Samsung Smart Tags work a long distance? SmartTag uses Bluetooth Low Energy to communicate with your phone, and its maximum connection range is 120 meters. The same kind of tech is used for a wireless stream of music on your phone.
